The oldest military fortification in the Timok area, Timacum Minus (lat. Timacum - Timok, hydronym; lat. Minus - "lower"), was built in the valley of Beli Timok, near the village of Ravna, not far from Knjaževac.

The Church of the Mother of God in Donja Kamenica was built at the end of the 14th century, on the military road from Vidin to Pirot. Baroque towers give it austerity, and elements of the Moravian school give it beauty.

Strogost joj daju barokni tornjevi, a lepotu elementi Moravske škole.

Gornja Kamenica, monastery of St. Three

The Holy Trinity Monastery is located in the valley of Trgoviški Timok between Donja and Gornja Kamenica, 18 km southeast of Knjaževac. The church has the shape of a triconoch, with a small dome above the central part of the nave. The exonarthex was later added in 1874. The interior of the church was painted, but the frescoes were almost completely destroyed. Only a few fragments of frescoes that belong to the restoration from the first half of the 19th century have been preserved. The church is considered to be the endowment of the Serbian despot Lazar, the youngest son of Đurđe Branković, as evidenced by the inscription in plaster from 1454 ..

Gornja Kamenica, manastir Sv. Trojice

Between the two world wars, Knjaževac had five thousand inhabitants and about fifty cafes. One cafe for a hundred people!

The tradition has been preserved in the municipality of Knjaževac. Pure natural environment, fertile land and traditional way of cultivation, form a healthy basis of local cuisine and quality local wines.

The kitchen of the municipality of Knjaževac is a mixture of flavors. There is food on the table that was born of centuries of experience and which is traditionally carefully balanced and energetically valuable. When it comes to food, the municipality of Knjaževac could be said to "breathe and smell". It is our custom to prepare a "feast" for the guest, no matter what time of day and meal it is, the hosts will do their best to meet all your wishes.

Don't miss to try ours, homemade, gibanica or proju with cabbage. The Knjaževac area is known for exceptional cheeses ("small" and "large") and quality brandies, so be sure to try them and feel their "charms".

On the table you can find sarmice "gužvice" made of meadow cabbage, cremusa salad and the local specialty belmuž, as a must. Roast lamb you can try here will not be offered anywhere else. After a delicious appetizer, a high-calorie main course, followed by sweets, pies with cherries or walnuts (walnuts), vanilla and many other sweet delicacies that will complete your pleasure.

You pour all this with some of the quality Knjaževac wines, and then take a comfortable position and with the sounds of music or birds chirping, depending on your affinities, enjoy the sunset, fresh air and local stories, which the hosts will, of course, at your personal request. happy to talk.

If you visit one of the restaurants, it will offer you grilled specialties, soups, roast lamb and pork, fish specialties and ready meals. The whole pleasure will be accompanied by pleasant music performed by one of our local bands.

Wine in the Knjaževac area is inseparable from history and tradition. Vineyards are grown with love, and indigenous grape varieties grow in them, such as Prokuplje, Vranac, and Plovdina. Burgundy, Smederevo, Italian Riesling, Chardonnay, Semion, Sauvignon are also grown ... In the winery "Jović" in Potrkanje, they "invented" "Višnjica", a unique fruit wine made from cherries.

In Knjaževac, there is a belief that when everything is over, God and wine will remain, so the cellarmen decided to found the Association of Winemakers and to take care of the "drink of the gods" together. In the spirit of old times and tradition, in cooperation with the Homeland Museum, they formed the Wine Museum in Ravna. It houses barrels with the best varieties of wine, a wine shop and antique equipment for storing and cooling wine.

The people of Knjaževac were engaged in viticulture even under Turkish rule. At that time, Knjaževac wine was especially appreciated, which was considered the best Serbian wine under the name "Timok".

In 1927, the Viticultural and Agricultural Cooperative was founded here, the third in Serbia at that time. The direct successor of the mentioned cooperative is the company "Dzervin", which was renewed in 2013, and today is a respectable company of importance for the entire region.

In the gastronomic offer of the Knjaževac region, a special place is occupied by prepržolj - a rich beef burger that is served with two slices of toast, coated with oil and allspice.

TIMOKA TWO-FRONT SOCKS / DVOPREĐNE ČARAPE TIMOKA

Diverse in ornamental arrangement and rich in color, two-strand socks are distinct representatives of folklore "naive" art.

In the Knjaževac area, two-thread ornaments reached the peak of aesthetic development. It is rare to find two pairs of socks on which the ornaments and the composition of the pattern are the same.

Two-strand socks are made of domestic wool in two colors, which is why they got that name.
The basic parts of the sock are the foot and the upper
Socks are knitted from the top of the foot to the heel. When the foot or upholstery is knitted then the knitting continues into the upper. The foot and the upper part are spacious and ornamental and form a unique whole. The main place on the tops (according to which socks are divided into men's and women's) is the place for the middle pattern.
In most cases, the shape of the motif on women's socks is complex, larger, woven in several colors, and on men's socks, patterns of simpler shapes, smaller dimensions and only in one color predominate (eg red pattern on a black base).
The most beautiful socks were the so-called "Bridal", while the most valuable, which some old women kept as the greatest sanctuary - the selected, the most beautiful, "old".
Ornaments on double-breasted socks are a rich treasure of our cultural heritage.

"Prayer under Midzor" is a festival that is held every year on St. George's Day (May 6) in the villages of Vrtovac and Balta Berilovac at the gate of the Old Mountain. St. George's Day is a merry holiday, which celebrates the power of spring and nature. In Vrtovac, in a cell dedicated to St. George, a ritual sacrifice of a lamb is performed, when the people of Budžak call it "prayer". A ritual procession is organized - liturgy, refreshing cheese, weaving wreaths of mountain flowers, playing and singing. On the first Saturday after St. George's Day, the manifestation continues in Balta Berilovac.

The two twinned municipalities, the municipality of Knjaževac from Serbia and the municipality of Belogradchik from Bulgaria, have been cultivating economic, cultural, tourist and sports cooperation for years. The gathering of two towns and two peoples culminates every summer with the Parliament on Kadibogaz, in the area of the Knjaževac village of Novo Korito and the village of Salash on the Bulgarian side of the border. For three days, the border is crossed without a passport, friends hang out, relatives meet, sing and dance, buy and sell. The Kadibogaz Parliament is the largest cross-border parliament in the Balkans.

Dve pobratimljene opštine, opština Knjaževac iz Srbije i opština Belogradčik iz Bugarske, godinama neguju ekonomsku, kulturnu, turističku i sportsku saradnju. Druženje dve varoši i dva naroda kulminira svakog leta Saborom na Kadibogazu, u ataru knjaževačkog sela Novo Korito i sela Salaš sa bugarske strane granice. Tri dana granica se prelazi bez pasoša, druže se prijatelji, sretnu se rođaci, zapeva se i zaigra, kupuje se i prodaje se.
